Course Details
IPAF is renowned as the standard when it comes to powered access. This course aims to provide the knowledge and skills required to operate category 1b elevated platforms:
- Category 1b covers self-propelled booms (outriggers), trailers and vehicle mounted booms
As IPAF is so widely recognised it is highly likely that a client or principal contractor will require and IPAF ticket to demonstrate that you or your workforce are suitably qualified to operate these types of equipment in the workplace. This also means that the qualification covers a very wide array or sectors from Construction, Maintenance and Cleaning Services, to Manufacturing & Engineering.
As the safe use of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) requires the learner to identifysafety notices and read and thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual, literacy and language comprehension are important requirements for any MEWP user.
Equally, the use of MEWPs can be physically demanding, users should be physically fit and in good health and should, generally, not have problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, fear of heights / vertigo, giddiness / difficulty with balance, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness.

- MEWP categories
- Structural parts
- Familiarisation and pre-use inspections
- Platform movements, travel and safe operation
- Ground conditions
- Hazard awareness
Practical Training Modules
- Site risk assessment
- Introduction & familiarisation to the MEWP
- Major component identification
- Pre-use checks and inspections
- Safe operation of the machine including shut down procedures and pre-use function checks
- Route planning
- Machine operation practice
- Parking the machine

This course cost is fully inclusive of a hard copy of the IPAF PAL card alongside digital access via the IPAF app.
